Pre-Medicine Overview

Rockhurst offers pre-health advising to students who plan to continue on to schools of medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. Students interested in health care can major in any RU degree program. Pre-health advisors work with students to develop an individualized plan. Health professional schools require a combination of academic achievement, professional development, volunteering, and leadership. Our advisors use Blackboard as the pre-health hub for volunteer opportunities, MCAT prep, lists of jobs in hospitals and speaker series on campus. These things can ready any pre-med student for what to expect in future years.

RU has agreements with several area schools, including Kansas City University (KCU), Saint Louis University (SLU), A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) and University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC), for early admission with a variety of perks. These perks include no MCAT requirement, entry after junior year and a few others. Our pre-health committee will work closely with you throughout the process, from pre-health registration to the day you graduate, to make sure you’re where you want to be.

Our focus is always on the individual student, and that begins as soon as you apply to RU, which is unique to our program, which has a high acceptance rate. Before you start your pre-med courses, we’ll put you in a small group with others in the same degree and you’ll get an academic advisor. This group meets weekly, which helps the advisor get to know every student, enhancing their ability to write a detailed letter of evaluation/recommendation to medical schools when you apply.

Pre-Medicine student Janak Patel talks about his experience at Rockhurst University.

"The faculty at Rockhurst have done an excellent job in preparing me for a career in medicine, not only with a modern scientific curriculum, but also with an excellent liberal arts background that has made me a very well-rounded individual. KCUMB was my first choice for medical school because they have a deep tradition of excellence while constantly putting the student first. KCUMB is invested in the community and is constantly making changes to give its students the best education and experience possible." ~Janak Patel

Rockhurst is located in close proximity to three medical schools: Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC), University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC-SOM), and Kansas City University of Medical Bioscences (KCUMB). The close proximity of Rockhurst to these schools allows RU students to interact with medical students and at these institutions on a regular basis. In addition to the local medical schools, RU has pre-medical scholars and partner agreements with Saint Louis University (SLU) medical school A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Medicine (ATSU-KCOM). Learn more about the Pre-Medical Scholars Program.
