At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 “The Armistice” effectively ending WWI was signed by France, Great Britain and Germany.  “The Great War,” fought from July 1914 until November 1918, was one of the deadliest and most destructive in the world’s history.  Over 9,000,000 soldiers and 7,000,000 civilians died as a result of the war.

The United States officially entered the war on April 6, 1917.  4,700,000 Americans stepped forward serving in uniform.  2,000,000 were deployed overseas to fight – 116,516 never came back home.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of this war.  At 11:00 AM on Sunday, November 11, Rockhurst University will join thousands of others throughout the United States by tolling our bells 21 times honoring the men and women who served and sacrificed in the “The War to End All Wars” and praying that one day there will truly be an end to the wars.
