Our History

The Helzberg School of Management at Rockhurst University is Kansas City's only Jesuit business school. As such, we strive to develop ethical business leaders who make a positive difference in the world. Here are some highlights from the Helzberg School's rich history that have contributed to its continued growth and innovation. 

1975 Graduate Business Division is established. 

1976 North Central accredits the MBA program.

1977 The Executive semester of the MBA is created.

1978 The Executive Fellows program is established, the first Executive MBA in Kansas City and one of the first 20 programs in the nation. 

1981 Hallmark Education Foundation awards the college a significant gift to grow the number of business faculty.

Hallmark Grant Advisory Committee recommends the establishment of a School of Management. 

1983 The School of Management is established, and Rev. Nicholas Rashford, S.J., is named the first dean. 

1999 Nu Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi is established. 

2001 Rockhurst and Kansas City University of Medical and Biological Sciences (KCUMB) partner to create region's first integrated DO/MBA dual-degree program

The School of Management is named the Helzberg School of Management after receiving an extraordinary donation from Barnett and Shirley Helzberg

The Helzberg School of Management receives "Candidacy Status" for accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). 

2002 A $6.2 million renovation of Conway Hall, home of the Helzberg School of Management, is completed in August.

2006 AACSB International Certificate of Accreditation received on April 3. 

A collegiate chapter of Beta Gamma Signma is established. 

2007 Executive Fellows MBA program is expanded to focus on executive coaching and personal leadership development. 

2011 AACSB reaccreditation confirmed on January 5. 

The Professional MBA program is restructured to include a focus on personal and professional development, active student engagement and experiential learning. 

Helzberg School undergraduates achieve the highest CPA exam pass rate in the region at 77.8%.

The Helzberg School of Management establishes a Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter, renamed EnActUs in 2012. 

2013 U.S. News & World Report ranks the Helzberg School of Management's MBA in management No. 21 in the nation. 

The Master of Science in Business Intelligence and Analytics program launches. 

2014 The Master of Arts in management program launches.

U.S. News & World Report ranks the MBA in management No. 20 in the nation, the undergraduate management program No. 18, and the undergraduate international business program No. 25

2015 MBA program ranked No. 2 in Kansas City by the Kansas City Business Journal.

U.S. News & World Report ranks the undergraduate management program No. 10 in the nation.  

CPA exam summary performance results rank No. 1 regionally and in the Top 30 nationwide by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. 

The Helzberg School launches 11 graduate certificate programs to accommodate working professionals seeking enhanced graduate education.
